Ongongo Waterfall

Ongongo is fed by a spring rather than by rainfall, which is why it runs all year in a region that is otherwise dry, dropping a few metres into a deep pool ringed by tufa rock and palms in a narrow gorge. The water is clear and cool and deep enough to swim in properly, which in Kunene makes it something of an event. A community-run campsite sits at the site and the fee goes to the local conservancy.

When to go

May to October is the dry season and the practical window for the tracks. The spring runs year round regardless of rainfall. Midday is warmest for swimming.

Honest expectations

The access track is rough and a four-wheel drive is needed. Facilities at the campsite are basic. The pool gets crowded when several vehicles arrive at once.
