Khaudum National Park

Khaudum covers around three and a half thousand square kilometres of Kalahari woodland in the northeast, unfenced on the Botswana side so animals move freely between the two. It is the least developed national park in Namibia: the tracks are deep sand, there is no fuel, no shop and almost no signage, and park rules require two vehicles travelling together. Elephant numbers are high in the dry season, roan antelope are here in one of their few Namibian strongholds, and wild dog use the park.

When to go

June to October is the dry season, when animals concentrate at waterholes and the tracks are passable. The rains from December to March make much of the park unreachable. Nights in June and July are cold.

Before you go

Two four-wheel-drive vehicles travelling together are required by the park and this is enforced for good reason: getting stuck alone here is serious. There is no fuel, water or supplies inside. Navigation is by GPS; tracks are unsigned and many are wrong on standard maps.
