The Museu Nacional de Etnografia in Nampula holds the country's main collection of material culture from the northern peoples, particularly the Makonde and the Makhuwa: carved masks and figures, musical instruments, household objects, and displays on initiation rites, healing and the mapiko masked dance of the Makonde, which UNESCO added to its urgent safeguarding list in 2023. The building is modest and the collection is better than the presentation.
