The Macuti lighthouse stands on the Beira seafront, a red and white striped tower put up in 1904 to mark the approach to the Pungwe. Beside it on the sand lies the rusted hull of the Macuti wreck, a cargo ship driven ashore decades ago and left where it grounded, now a mass of corroded plate that people walk out to at low tide. The two together make the standard Beira photograph.

When to go
May to September is the cooler dry season. Low tide exposes the wreck fully and is worth timing for. Cyclone season from December to March brings heavy surf.
Honest expectations
The wreck is sharp, rusted through and unstable; climbing on it causes injuries. The lighthouse is not open to visitors. The beach here carries a lot of washed-up debris.
