Beira

Beira is Mozambique's second city and the port for the corridor to Zimbabwe, and it was built up in the middle of the twentieth century with a remarkable amount of art deco and tropical modernist architecture: the Grande Hotel, the railway station, cinemas and apartment blocks. Much of it is now in poor condition, and the Grande Hotel, abandoned since the 1960s, has been occupied by hundreds of families for decades. The city was badly hit by Cyclone Idai in 2019.

What you actually see

• The art deco - cinemas, apartment blocks and public buildings from the mid-century.
• The railway station - a large modernist building at the head of the Zimbabwe line.
• The Grande Hotel - a vast abandoned hotel, occupied as housing since the 1960s.
• The port - the working harbour at the Pungwe mouth.

When to go

May to September is the cooler dry season and the most comfortable. Cyclone season runs from December to March. Humidity is high year round on this coast.

Honest expectations

The Grande Hotel is people's homes, not a ruin to explore, and going in without arrangement is intrusive and unwise. Much of the architecture is decaying and some buildings are unsafe. Cyclone damage from 2019 is still visible in places.
