Chinhamapere Rock Art

On a granite hillside near Manica town are painted figures in red ochre, human forms and animals, attributed to the hunter-gatherer communities who lived here long before the farming populations arrived. The site is not a museum piece: it remains a sacred place where local ceremonies are held, and access is only with a guide from the community, who conducts a short observance at the foot before anyone goes up. Visitors remove their shoes for the last part.

When to go

Things to know

Access is only with a community guide and the protocol is not optional; turning up alone is not acceptable. The climb is short but steep with loose rock. Photography may be restricted depending on the guide.
