Huashan Rock Art

Along the Zuo river in southwestern Guangxi, cliffs carry paintings in red haematite made by the Luoyue people between roughly the fifth century BC and the second century AD, and the Huashan panel is the largest: a wall about 170 metres wide and forty high covered with about 1,900 figures, most in the same posture with arms raised and knees bent, along with drums, dogs, boats and swords. The scale and the height at which some were painted remain unexplained. UNESCO inscribed the Zuojiang Huashan rock art landscape in 2016. The site is reached by boat, viewed from the water and a riverside platform.

When to go

October to April for dry weather and calm water; summer rain raises the river and can suspend boats. Morning light falls better on the cliff. Holidays fill the boats.

Before you go

The paintings are viewed from a distance across water, so binoculars help; details are hard to make out with the naked eye. Access is by ticketed boat only, and the site is remote.
