The road south from Marrakech towards Asni climbs into the foothills and enters a gorge where the walls close in and Aleppo pine grows on the slopes - the first properly mountainous stretch on the way to Toubkal, and the point at which the plain is left behind. Above it on a spur stands Moulay Brahim, a village built around the tomb of a sixteenth-century saint, which is a pilgrimage site of real local importance; the village is a dense cluster of houses on a steep slope, with a long stepped street of stalls selling incense, henna, sweets and votive items leading to the shrine, and a moussem that fills it. Non-Muslims may not enter the shrine itself but can walk the village. The 2023 earthquake caused significant damage here and reconstruction continues. The Kik plateau, a spring flower meadow with a Toubkal view, is on the ridge above.

What you actually see

  • A pine gorge - the first mountain stretch on the road south from Marrakech.
  • A pilgrimage village - built around a sixteenth-century saint's tomb on a spur.
  • The stepped market street - incense, henna and votive stalls leading up to the shrine.
  • Earthquake rebuilding - visible reconstruction across the village since 2023.

When to go

Spring for the gorge and the plateau above. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Non-Muslims cannot enter the shrine. The village suffered heavy damage in 2023 and remains under reconstruction. The stepped streets are steep and crowded on pilgrimage days. Parking is difficult.

Nearby

The Kik plateau is on the ridge above; Asni and Imlil are south.
