Moulay Bouzerktoun is a small village on the rocky coast north of Essaouira, and it exists in the windsurfing world for one reason: the same north-easterly that gives Essaouira its nickname as the windy city blows here side-shore across a rocky point with waves coming in, which produces the combination wave sailors want and produces it with unusual reliability from about April to September, sometimes for weeks without a break. It has hosted international events. It is a spot for experienced sailors and kiters - the launch is over rock, the wind is strong, and the swell is Atlantic - and beginners learn at Essaouira bay, which is sandy and forgiving, before coming here. The village has a few basic camps and cafes and very little else; most people stay in Essaouira and drive up. There is a marabout on the point that gives the place its name.

What you actually see

  • Reliable side-shore wind - blowing hard from about April to September.
  • A rocky wave spot - the launch over rock, for experienced sailors rather than learners.
  • A tiny village - a few camps and cafes and almost nothing else.
  • The marabout - the shrine on the point the place is named for.

When to go

April to September for wind. Several days.

Honest expectations

This is an advanced spot - the rock launch and the strength of the wind make it unsuitable for learners. There is almost no accommodation; most people stay in Essaouira. The wind that makes it good makes it unpleasant for anything else. Water is cold.

Nearby

Essaouira is south; Safi is north along the coast.
