The Marrakech Medina

The medina of Marrakech is the beating heart of the Red City, a UNESCO labyrinth of narrow, rose-hued lanes crammed with souks selling everything from lanterns and leather to spices and carpets. Behind plain walls hide tranquil riads and lavish palaces, the great Koutoubia minaret rises above it all, and the whole is a dizzying, intoxicating assault on the senses, at once chaotic and enchanting.

When to go

Spring and autumn for pleasant weather, as summer is fiercely hot; go with time to wander and get lost in the souks. Evenings, when the great square nearby comes alive, are especially atmospheric.

Before you go

It is chaotic, crowded and intense, with persistent touts, faux guides and hustlers, and the souks can overwhelm; haggling is expected and firm. Getting lost in the lanes is inevitable and part of the experience. A tranquil riad is a welcome refuge from the sensory overload.
