Naadam Festival

Naadam is Mongolia's national festival and its oldest continuous tradition, built on the three games of wrestling, horse racing and archery that once trained and tested the steppe armies. The main event fills Ulaanbaatar's stadium each July with an opening ceremony, hundreds of wrestlers in open-fronted jackets performing eagle dances between bouts, and archers in silk deel shooting at leather targets. The horse races are the part that stays with visitors: run across open country over distances up to thirty kilometres, ridden by children, with hundreds of horses thundering to a finish line on the steppe. UNESCO lists the festival as intangible heritage.

When to go

The national Naadam falls in mid July, with the main days on the eleventh and twelfth. Provincial naadams spread across July and are often more welcoming and far less crowded. Book flights and hotels months ahead for the capital, since the whole country travels for it.

Honest expectations

The Ulaanbaatar stadium event is crowded, hot and heavily ticketed, and the horse races happen well outside the city, so seeing everything means transport planning. Many travellers report the countryside naadams as the better experience: fewer visitors, closer access and genuine local atmosphere. Prices in the capital rise sharply across the festival week.
