Eej Khad

Eej Khad is a large boulder in open steppe that has become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Mongolia, drawing thousands of people who come to make wishes: the custom is to circle it three times, whisper a request, leave an offering of milk, sweets, money or vodka, and return three times over three years to complete the cycle. Around the central rock are smaller stones with their own associations, prayer flags, and a scatter of offerings that accumulates through the year. Practice mixes Buddhist and older shamanic elements, and while some Mongolians treat it seriously and others sceptically, the traffic is undeniable, with cars parked across the steppe at weekends. It is close enough to Ulaanbaatar for a half-day, and the setting is plain steppe, so the interest is entirely in the practice.

When to go

May to October for the roads. Weekends are busiest and the best time to see the practice, though quieter on weekdays. The lunar new year period brings large numbers. It takes a couple of hours including the drive.

Honest expectations

There is nothing to see beyond a rock and its offerings; the value is anthropological. Litter from offerings accumulates and the site can look untidy. Behaviour should be respectful even if the practice seems curious. No facilities beyond a few stalls.
