Chinggis Khaan National Museum

Opened in 2022, this is the country's flagship museum and the most modern in presentation: eight floors covering the peoples of the steppe from prehistory through the Xiongnu, Turkic and Uyghur khaganates to the Mongol empire and its successor states, with the empire period given the most space. Displays include armour and weapons, coins and seals, manuscripts, textiles and reconstructions, along with loans and reproductions of documents held abroad such as letters between khans and popes. Labelling is bilingual and the interpretation is more thorough and better designed than in the older museums, with an audio guide that is worth taking. The building itself is new and purpose-built. For visitors who want the history of the empire explained coherently before travelling to the steppe, this is now the place to start.

Honest expectations

Entry is expensive by Mongolian standards. Some key objects are reproductions rather than originals, which the labels state. The building can be busy with school and tour groups. There is overlap with the National Museum next door, so doing both in one day is repetitive.
