La Castel is a gorge cut through reef limestone near Fetești in the northwest, with cliffs, caves and a rock outcrop that carried a fortified settlement in prehistory, which is where the name comes from. Excavation on the site produced Trypillian material and later layers. The gorge is protected for its geology and its steppe and rock vegetation, and springs rise along the foot of the cliffs. The Draghiste river cut the gorge, and the reef limestone it runs through was laid down when this whole region was under a warm shallow sea.
