Xcalak

Xcalak is where Mexico runs out - the last village on the coast before the Belize border channel, once a thriving copra port of thousands until the 1955 hurricane, now a few hundred souls on sand streets living between a national marine park and a grid that never arrived. Solar panels and generators power the handful of dive lodges and guesthouses; supplies come up the lonely road; and the sea provides the program. The reef park - Arrecifes de Xcalak - keeps the coral in near-Chinchorro condition: walls and swim-throughs minutes offshore, La Poza's channel where hundreds of tarpon stack like silver logs, and snorkel gardens off the village pier. The flats behind the reef are fly-fishing legend - bonefish, permit and the grand slam chased with village guides who read the water like weather - and the mangrove lagoons hold manatees for the lucky. Evenings offer one restaurant's catch, a beer at the pier, and southern stars. Travelers who need a schedule should stay in Mahahual; Xcalak is for those who came to stop.

When to go

December to August for seas and flats at their best; crossings and channels blow out in norther season. Book lodges ahead - beds are few by design.

Honest expectations

Off-grid means exactly that: cash only, generator hours, no pharmacy, patchy signal. The beach is reef-flat, not resort sand. Come self-sufficient and the emptiness pays in full.
