San Angel and Bazar Sabado

San Angel was a village of orchards and monasteries long before the city arrived, and its core still reads that way: cobbled lanes climbing between high-walled colonial mansions draped in bougainvillea, the baroque bulk of the El Carmen monastery with its tiled domes and crypt of naturally preserved mummies, and quiet plazas where little seems to have moved since the viceroyalty. On Saturdays it wakes into the Bazar Sabado, an institution since 1960: the Plaza San Jacinto and a seventeenth-century mansion fill with juried artisans - silverwork, blown glass, textiles, ceramics, alebrijes - while painters hang canvases on the plaza railings and organ grinders work the crowds. Nearby, the Museo Casa Estudio preserves the twin functionalist studios Juan O'Gorman built for Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, joined by a rooftop bridge, and the San Angel Inn pours margaritas in a hacienda courtyard across the street. Come on a Saturday and the whole quarter is the museum.

When to go

Saturday, roughly 10 am to 5 pm, is the event; other days offer the monastery and studios in near-solitude. Dry-season Saturdays let the plaza painters spread widest.

Good to know

On any day but Saturday the quarter is beautiful but quiet - plan around the bazaar. Prices reflect juried quality; haggling is limited. Saturday parking is hopeless - arrive by taxi or Metrobus.
