Mercado de Coyoacan

Two blocks from Coyoacan's plazas, the covered market has fed the neighborhood since the 1950s and never bothered to gentrify. Inside the concrete hall, aisles are stacked with chiles by the kilo, mounds of mole paste, nopales being diced to order, piñatas swinging overhead and flower stalls perfuming whole corridors. The reason travelers make the pilgrimage sits at the center: the tostada stands, where crisp tortillas are piled to order with shredded chicken, pata, ceviche, shrimp or crab, passed over the counter faster than you can claim a stool. Around them, fondas serve comida corrida to market workers, juice stands liquefy anything that grows, and quesadilla griddles turn out blue-corn pockets of squash blossom and huitlacoche. It is a working market first and an attraction second, which is exactly why it is worth an hour - this is how the city actually eats.

Peak weekend lunch means waiting behind occupied stools; go weekdays if you want to eat without hovering. It is a real market - floors are wet, aisles are tight and card payments are rare, so carry small cash.
