Metepec Trees of Life

The arbol de la vida is Mexican folk sculpture at its most exuberant, and Metepec is its capital. The form descends from friars' catechism aids - clay trees hung with Adam, Eve, the serpent and the angel to teach Genesis - which Metepec's potters inflated over generations into polychrome universes: branching candelabra a hand tall or two metres high, crowded with flowers, birds, suns, skeletons, mermaids and whole village scenes, painted in colors that ignore restraint on principle. The craft survives in family workshops, where techniques pass parent to child: local clay kneaded with cattail down, figures modeled and moulded separately, assembled on wire, kiln-fired and painted over days or months. Workshops around the Calvario hill welcome visitors to watch masters - several of national-treasure rank - at the bench, and the craft market sells everything from keychain trees to commissions. The Calvario's own monumental tree and the October Quimera cultural fair frame the tradition at town scale.

Honest expectations

Serious pieces carry serious prices - months of a master's bench time - though small works start modestly. Shipping fragile trees is a solvable but real logistics question; good workshops pack professionally.
