Ex-Hacienda de Chautla

The photograph everyone knows from Puebla's countryside - a grey stone castle with pointed turrets rising straight from a lake, volcanoes behind - is the Ex-Hacienda de Chautla, and the building is exactly the romantic import it appears. The hacienda itself dates to viceregal times as a wheat-and-pulque estate; in the late nineteenth century its English-connected owner remade the grounds with British ambitions, damming spring water into a lake and raising the Castillo Gillow, an English-style manor-folly on the water's edge, all gables and grey stone against the maguey fields. Today the state runs the estate as a country park: rowboats circle the little castle, anglers pull rainbow trout from the spring-fed water, and lawns under old ash and pine host weekend picnics, quinceanera photo shoots and wedding parties in industrial quantities. The main hacienda buildings keep a chapel and event halls; trails loop the reservoir. It is unapologetically a postcard - and on a clear morning with Iztaccihuatl over the turrets, a very good one.

It is a gentle park outing, not a museum - interiors are mostly event spaces. Weekend wedding parties can colonize the best angles. Food service is simple; many bring picnics.
