Capulalpam de Mendez

Capulalpam sits at 2,000 metres in the pine-oak Sierra Juarez, and it wears its history in stone: lanes of grey volcanic rock, whitewashed houses with red tile, and at the centre the temple of San Mateo, whose interior keeps gilded altarpieces and a carved cedar retablo that startle visitors expecting village modesty. Silver and gold mining paid for that gilding and eventually scarred the valley; the community's decision to close the mines and take its future from the forest instead is the reason the pueblo magico designation arrived in 2007 and the reason the surrounding woods are dense with birds. Two things distinguish the town. The first is traditional Zapotec medicine, practiced openly at the community health centre where curanderos treat with herbs, limpias, bone-setting and temazcal - a living lineage the village presents on its own terms rather than as folklore. The second is community ecotourism: trails to the Peña de Cruz lookout and the sacred Arroyo Grande caves, a trout farm and comedor, cabins in the pines, and a museum of village life in an old rectory.

When to go

November to May for dry trails; the sierra is cold at night in every month. Village fiestas in September crowd the plaza with brass bands.

Honest expectations

The mountain road from Oaxaca is winding and slow. Services are village-simple; Spanish carries the day. Traditional-medicine sessions are booked in advance and treated as care, not spectacle.
