Becan

Becan announces its anxieties at the gate: the entire city core is ringed by a ditch two kilometres around and up to five metres deep - among the oldest large-scale fortifications in the Maya lowlands, crossed by seven ancient causeways, and the reason archaeologists named the site "path of the snake," after the channel. Inside the moat, the city packs its monuments close in the Rio Bec manner: massive twin-towered facades whose steep ornamental stairways climb to false temples - architecture as stage-set - alongside genuinely climbable pyramids like Structure IX, the site's tallest at 32 metres, and Structure VIII, whose summit view rolls green to the horizon with Xpujil's towers breaking the canopy. The circuit's pleasure is variety: an internal tunnel passes beneath one plaza group, a preserved stucco mask peers from a display case on Structure X, and rooms, patios and passageways invite actual exploration rather than rope-line viewing. With Chicanna's monster-mouth doorway minutes away and Calakmul's biosphere beyond, Becan anchors the Rio Bec's compact, crowd-free ruin cluster.

Honest expectations

Xpujil's services are frontier-simple - fuel, cash and water planning matter across the whole corridor. Climbs are steep with minimal rails. Signage is adequate; a guide sharpens the archaeology.
