Grande Montagne Nature Reserve

Rodrigues was almost entirely stripped of its native forest within two centuries of settlement, cut for timber and cleared for grazing until only fragments survived, and Grande Montagne is the main attempt to reverse that: about twenty-five hectares on the highest ground of the island, cleared of introduced species and replanted with tens of thousands of native and endemic plants raised in the reserve nursery, several of them species that had been reduced to a handful of individuals. The Rodrigues fody and Rodrigues warbler, both endemic birds brought back from the edge of extinction, live in the restored woodland. Guided walks run on marked trails, and the ridge gives views over the island and its lagoon in both directions.

When to go

May to December for drier trails and better views. Mornings are best for birds and before the interior clouds over. Guided walks run to a schedule; ask in Port Mathurin or book ahead.

Honest expectations

The forest is young replanting rather than mature woodland. Visits are guided rather than free access. The interior is often windy and can be wet even in the dry season. Bird sightings need patience.
