Prinz Eugen Wreck

The Prinz Eugen, a German heavy cruiser handed over after the war and later used as a test target, was towed to Kwajalein and capsized in the shallows off Enubuj in 1946, where she has lain ever since: hull upturned in around thirty metres of water with the stern in the shallows and one propeller standing clear above the surface. She is one of the few German capital ships that can be dived at all.

What you actually see

• The upturned hull - the cruiser lying capsized on the lagoon floor.
• The propeller - the screw standing clear above the water.
• The shallow stern - the after end within easy diving depth.
• The rarity - one of very few German capital ships divable anywhere.

When to go

December to April is the calmer season. Access is governed by permission rather than weather. Visibility in the lagoon is generally good.

Honest expectations

Kwajalein is a controlled area and access requires permission that is not straightforward to obtain. Residual fuel oil remains a concern inside the hull. Diving needs an operator and clearance arranged well ahead.
