Clapham Junction Cart Ruts
A dense field of prehistoric parallel grooves cut into limestone, crossing and branching like railway tracks.

At Misraħ Għar il-Kbir near Dingli the bare limestone is cut with dozens of pairs of parallel grooves running across the rock, crossing and diverging so densely that a British archaeologist named the site after a London railway junction. Nobody is certain what made them: sledges, carts, or some kind of slide car dragging loads, at some point in prehistory. Some run over cliff edges, showing the landscape has changed since they were cut.

- The rut field - dozens of paired grooves crossing and branching across bare rock.
- The junctions - points where sets of ruts diverge and cross each other.
- The cliff-edge runs - ruts continuing over drops, showing later landscape change.
- The cave dwellings - the nearby Ghar il-Kbir cave settlement, occupied until the 1830s.
When to go
October to May is most comfortable; summer heat on the bare rock is severe. Low raking light in the morning or evening shows the ruts best. There is no shade.
What to expect
The site is unmarked and unfenced with no interpretation on the ground. The ruts are hard to see in flat midday light. There are no facilities and access is across rough limestone.
