Addu is the Maldives that does not look like the brochure, and is all the better for it: the country's southernmost atoll, where several islands are joined by a causeway link road long enough to cycle end to end, past wetlands, banyan-shaded lanes and villages that feel like a different country from the resort strip. The British ran an air base at Gan through the war and after, leaving hangars, straight roads and a distinct local accent. Underwater, Addu delivers what the north cannot always match - resident manta cleaning stations, a huge sunken British tanker, and reefs that escaped the worst of past bleaching.

What you actually see

  • The causeway link road - cycling island to island past lagoon and wetland.
  • The British Loyalty wreck - a large sunken wartime tanker, a landmark dive.
  • Manta cleaning stations - reliable manta encounters at several reef points.
  • Eydhigali Kilhi wetland - the protected lake and birdlife near Hithadhoo.

When to go

Sitting near the equator, Addu runs warm and diveable year round, with the calmest seas and best visibility generally from roughly December to April. Manta activity varies with monsoon currents - local dive centres know the timing. Rain comes in short tropical bursts rather than lost days.

Honest expectations

Addu is a working local atoll, not a resort fantasy - beaches are pleasant rather than postcard-perfect, and the appeal is diving, cycling and everyday Maldivian life. Local-island rules apply on most of it: modest dress away from designated bikini beaches and no alcohol outside licensed resort premises. The domestic flight adds cost and time from Male, which is exactly why so few visitors make it here.

Nearby

Gan's wartime remains, Hithadhoo's wetlands and the reefs ringing the whole atoll.
