Hanifaru Bay

When the tide and the moon line up, currents funnel plankton into a small bay on the edge of Baa Atoll and the water fills with mouths: reef manta rays arriving in dozens, sometimes over a hundred, wheeling in slow chains and barrel rolls through the soup, occasionally joined by whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay is the best-known manta feeding aggregation in the world, and its fame nearly ruined it - so the whole area sits inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve with rules that bite: snorkellers only, no scuba, no touching, limited boats and set time slots. Managed properly, it remains one of the most extraordinary things a swimmer can witness.

When to go

The southwest monsoon between roughly May and November drives the plankton blooms; the peak is usually August and September. Sightings track the lunar cycle, and operators plan trips around it - ask about moon phase when booking. Outside the season the bay is simply an empty stretch of water.

Honest expectations

This is a lottery, not a guarantee: some days deliver a hundred mantas, others none, and no operator can promise. Rules are strict and enforced - snorkel only, no fins kicking near animals, no chasing - and good operators brief them properly. The bay gets busy in peak weeks, with boats queuing for slots. Getting to Baa Atoll needs a domestic flight or seaplane, so build a multi-day stay rather than a day trip from Male.
