Tanjung Piai
The southernmost point of continental Asia, a mangrove headland in Johor with boardwalks over mud and shipping lanes offshore.

Tanjung Piai is where mainland Asia ends: a low mangrove spit in southwest Johor with a marker at the tip and the Singapore Strait beyond it, busy with ships lying at anchor. The park protects mangrove and intertidal mudflat and is recognised as a wetland of international importance, and boardwalks run out over the mud so you can look down at mudskippers and fiddler crabs without wading. The walk is short and flat, about an hour at a slow pace, ending at a platform where a globe monument marks the point. Long-tailed macaques patrol the boardwalk, migratory waders use the flats in season, and the mangrove edge is visibly eroding in places despite breakwaters.
What you actually see
- The southern tip marker - the globe monument at the end of continental Asia.
- The mangrove boardwalks - raised walkways over intertidal mud and roots.
- Mudskippers and fiddler crabs - mudflat life visible directly below the planks.
- The shipping anchorage - vessels lying offshore in the Singapore Strait.
When to go
Low tide exposes the mudflats and is better for crabs and mudskippers; high tide brings water under the boardwalks and looks tidier but shows less. Mornings are cooler, since there is almost no shade on the outer sections. Migratory waders pass through roughly between September and March.
Honest expectations
It is a short visit built around a signpost, and people who drive an hour expecting a landscape find a flat mangrove walk instead. There is no shade on the exposed boardwalk and the heat is heavy. Litter washes in on the tide and collects among the roots. Macaques are bold and will go through an open bag. Boardwalk sections close for repair.
Nearby
Kukup and its stilt village and mangrove island lie a short drive north; Johor Bahru is an hour east.
