Taman Negara

Taman Negara covers more than four thousand square kilometres of lowland rainforest that is often described as around 130 million years old, meaning it escaped the ice ages and the sea-level swings that reset most forests. Walking into it, the age registers as sheer structural complexity: buttressed dipterocarps, layers of understorey, and a soundscape of cicadas and gibbons. The best-known feature is the canopy walkway, a chain of suspension bridges strung between trees some forty metres up, among the longest of its kind. Wildlife is present but genuinely hard to see in dense forest; tapir, elephant and even tiger are in there, but most visitors settle for hornbills, monkeys, monitor lizards and the wildlife hides where you sit overnight hoping for something to come to a salt lick.

• Night walks and hides - guided after-dark walks and overnight stays in wildlife hides.
• Rapids shooting on the Tembeling - boat trips upriver through the rapids to Orang Asli settlements.

When to go

February to September avoids the heaviest rain; the monsoon from November to January can close trails and swell the rivers. Leeches are worst after rain. The park is busy on Malaysian school holidays and weekends.

Honest expectations

Big-mammal sightings are rare and marketing that suggests otherwise oversells it; come for the forest itself. The canopy walk is often crowded with a queue on the bridges and a strict one-way flow. Kuala Tahan across the river is a functional strip of floating restaurants rather than a jungle idyll. Humidity and leeches are constant, and good boots matter.
