Suffolk House

Suffolk House stands on what was Francis Light's pepper estate outside the town, and the building as it survives dates from the early nineteenth century, put up by a later owner and used as the residence of the governors of Prince of Wales Island - so a good deal of early colonial administration happened in its rooms, including negotiations that led to the founding of Singapore. It is Anglo-Indian Georgian: a broad two-storey block with deep verandahs and columns, built to move air rather than keep heat in. By the late twentieth century it was a roofless shell with trees growing through it, and the restoration completed in 2007 rebuilt it substantially from surviving fabric and documentation, winning conservation awards and a good deal of argument about how much was genuinely original.

Before you go

It is heavily restored rather than original, which some visitors find hollow. Much of it operates as a restaurant and event venue, so rooms can be closed. Displays are limited.
