The gardens were laid out in the 1880s in a valley that had been quarried for granite, which is why a stream and a waterfall run through the middle of them and why people in Penang still call the place the Waterfall Gardens. It is a working botanical collection with an orchid house, a fern house, a cactus house and stands of mature tropical trees, but for most of the city it functions as the public park: at six in the morning the loop road is full of walkers and joggers, and by eight the heat has cleared them out. Trails at the top end climb into the forest and connect to the Penang Hill paths, which is the serious way up the ridge.
What you actually see
- The waterfall - the cascade at the head of the valley that gives the gardens their local name.
- The orchid and fern houses - the glasshouse collections near the main entrance.
- The mature tree avenues - old cannonball, candle and rain trees along the loop road.
- The hill trails - forest paths from the top gate climbing towards Penang Hill.
When to go
Early morning is the time, both for temperature and because that is when the gardens are alive with people using them. By late morning the heat is heavy and shade is patchy. Entry is free and the gates open at dawn, while the glasshouses keep shorter hours. Weekends are busy with families and picnics.
Honest expectations
The long-tailed macaques are a real nuisance, aggressive around bags and food, and feeding them is banned but still happens. The waterfall is fenced off at the top and is a modest flow outside wet spells. Plant labelling is inconsistent. Parking near the entrance is limited and fills early at weekends.
Nearby
Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si are just up the road; George Town is fifteen minutes east.
