Sipadan

Sipadan is not a continental island but the top of an extinct volcanic seamount, which is why the reef simply ends a few metres from the beach and drops something like six hundred metres into the dark. That wall geometry is what concentrates the life. Divers here routinely meet green and hawksbill turtles in numbers that stop feeling notable by the second dive, barracuda in a tornado formation at Barracuda Point, big schools of bumphead parrotfish, and grey reef and white-tip sharks on the wall. Nobody stays on the island; accommodation is on Mabul and Kapalai nearby, and access is capped at a limited number of daily permits allocated through operators, a restriction introduced to let the reef recover and now the single biggest planning constraint.

What you actually see

• Barracuda Point - the wall dive where barracuda form a slow rotating column.
• The Drop Off - the wall a few metres from the beach, straight down into the blue.
• Turtle Tomb - a submerged cavern, for technical divers only and genuinely dangerous.
• Mabul muck diving - the neighbouring island's macro life, frogfish, mandarinfish and blue-ringed octopus.

When to go

April to December, with the best visibility often around April and August. Permits are the limiting factor, not the season: book through an operator months in advance, and expect only one or two Sipadan days within a longer stay.

Honest expectations

You cannot simply turn up. Permits are capped and rationed by operators, usually to guests staying several nights, so a spontaneous visit is not possible. Sipadan is an advanced site with current, and beginners will be steered to Mabul. The region has a security history that has shaped how boats operate, and operators follow official guidance on movements, which is worth confirming when booking.
