Pulau Payar Marine Park

Payar is the main island of a marine park in the Straits of Malacca, roughly between Langkawi and Penang, and it is a day-trip destination rather than a place to stay: no accommodation, one beach, a ranger station and a floating platform anchored offshore. The shallow water at the beach is the draw, because juvenile blacktip reef sharks patrol a metre from the sand and can be watched from standing depth. Snorkelling off the platform reaches better coral, and there are dive sites on the sheltered side with soft corals and coral gardens. Everything runs to the boat schedule: you arrive mid-morning, eat a buffet lunch on the platform, and leave in the afternoon.

What you actually see

• Blacktip reef sharks - young sharks cruising the shallows right off the beach.
• The floating platform - the anchored pontoon used for snorkelling and lunch.
• Coral gardens - the dive sites on the sheltered side of the island.
• The ranger station beach - the single strip of sand with shade and a short trail.

When to go

The season runs roughly November to April, when the strait is calmest and visibility best; trips are cancelled in rough weather. Boats leave in the morning and return mid-afternoon, so the day is fixed for you. Weekends and holidays put several hundred people on one small beach, which is worth avoiding.

Honest expectations

It gets very crowded for its size, because most operators arrive within the same hour. Visibility in the strait is often mediocre, a few metres rather than the clear water of the east coast, and coral near the beach is worn. The buffet lunch is basic and the queue long. Fish feeding still happens despite park rules.

Langkawi is an hour north; the Penang coast lies to the southeast.
