Gunung Jerai

Jerai rises to 1,217 metres out of flat paddy country in Kedah and can be seen from far out in the Strait, which is why it worked for centuries as a landfall mark for ships coming to the Bujang Valley trading settlements at its foot - the oldest recorded civilisation site in Malaysia, with Hindu-Buddhist candi remains dated from around the fifth century. The mountain is limestone and granite with a cloud forest at the top where the vegetation changes abruptly, and a paved road climbs to a summit area with a rest house, a small museum and viewpoints over the plain and the sea. Sungai Teroi forest recreation park and a waterfall sit partway up. The view is best early; by late morning the cloud usually closes in and the haze season can blank it entirely.

All year; early morning for the view. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Cloud closes the summit most days by late morning and haze can blank the view for weeks. The road is steep and narrow. Facilities at the top are dated.
