Nyika Plateau

Nyika is Africa arranged like the Scottish Highlands: Malawi's largest national park rolls whaleback grassland at over two thousand metres, mist pooling in the hollows at dawn, zebra and roan antelope grazing the slopes, and leopards working the forest patches - a landscape so unlike safari Africa that first-timers keep checking the map. The plateau flowers into one of the region's great orchid displays in the rains, over two hundred terrestrial species starring in the show, and its lodge tradition runs to horseback safaris and evenings by log fires. Trout dams, waterfalls and Livingstonia's mission a rough drive away complete the northern circuit.

When to go

May to October for dry roads and crisp, clear days - nights genuinely freeze, pack accordingly; December to March swaps easy access for the orchid flowering and dramatic skies.

Honest expectations

The plateau is remote: the access road punishes vehicles and the fuel round-trip needs planning; accommodation choices are few, so book rather than hope. Game is present but dispersed highland-style - this is landscape-first safari. The cold surprises everyone; it should not surprise you.
