Ifaty and the Southwest Reef

Madagascar's south-west coast is dry, hot and lined by one of the longest barrier reefs in the Indian Ocean, and Ifaty is the easiest place to reach it: Vezo fishermen sail visitors out in wooden outrigger pirogues to snorkel over coral gardens and, in season, to look for whale sharks and humpbacks. Behind the beach lies a landscape found nowhere else - spiny forest of baobabs and octopus trees, thorned and grey-green, protected in small private reserves where guides point out the endemic plants and the birds that live among them. Village life along the shore runs on fishing and the tides.

When to go

The dry season from April to November suits the coast, with whale sharks generally in the warmer months around October to December and humpbacks passing between July and September. Wind picks up strongly in the middle of the year, which affects small-boat trips.

Honest expectations

Reef health has suffered in places from bleaching and fishing pressure, so snorkelling quality varies by site and operator - ask where they take you. The road from Tulear is rough and slow. Poverty is visible and persistent begging is common on the beach; local guidance suggests supporting the community through reserve fees and hired guides rather than direct handouts. Facilities are simple and water is scarce in the region.
