The chapel at Coloane village was built in 1928 in cream and yellow with a small bell tower and a round window above the door, facing a paved square on the waterfront with a monument commemorating the end of piracy on the island in 1910. It held relics of Francis Xavier and the bones of martyrs from Japan and Vietnam for many years, since moved elsewhere. The square in front is lined with cafés and is the centre of village life.
