Neumunster Abbey

Neumünster in the Grund was rebuilt as a Benedictine abbey in the seventeenth century after earlier foundations were destroyed, and after the abbey was suppressed the buildings served as a barracks, a police station and then a prison, which they remained until 1980. They were converted from the 1990s into a cultural centre with concert halls, exhibition space, courtyards and a brasserie. The complex lies within the inscribed old quarters and fortifications.

When to go

Year round; the grounds are open and free. The programme runs through the year. Summer brings outdoor events in the courtyards.

Honest expectations

It is a working venue and access depends on what is on. There is limited interpretation of the building's history. The brasserie is expensive.
