Free Public Transport

In 2020 Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make all public transport free, and the policy applies to everyone - residents, commuters from neighbouring countries and travellers alike. Buses, the Luxembourg City tram and second-class train travel across the whole national network cost nothing, with no ticket, no app and no validation required; you simply get on. For visitors this quietly reshapes a trip: day trips to Vianden, Echternach or the Moselle become free, the funicular and the city's panoramic lift are free, and the calculation of whether a detour is worth it disappears entirely.

Honest expectations

Free applies to second class only - first-class train travel still requires a ticket, and the moment you cross into Belgium, France or Germany the normal fares resume. Rural bus frequencies can be thin, and some scenic corners genuinely need a car. It has not made the country cheap: Luxembourg remains one of Europe's most expensive destinations for accommodation and food.
