Everyone photographs Vaduz Castle and nobody gets in - it is the prince's private residence. Gutenberg, on its rocky hill above Balzers in the south, is the consolation and arguably the better castle: a fully preserved medieval fortress whose keep, chapel and rose garden crown a knoll that has been settled since the Neolithic. The courtyard and grounds are freely walkable with Rhine valley views, the interior opens for guided tours and cultural events in season, and open-air concerts fill the courtyard on summer evenings.

When to go

Interior visiting is limited to set tours and events rather than daily opening - plan around the schedule or settle for grounds and views, which are genuinely worth the stop. Balzers is quiet; the visit pairs naturally with the bus route to or from Switzerland. The climb up is short but steep.
