Gutenberg Castle

Everyone photographs Vaduz Castle and nobody gets in - it is the prince's private residence. Gutenberg, on its rocky hill above Balzers in the south, is the consolation and arguably the better castle: a fully preserved medieval fortress whose keep, chapel and rose garden crown a knoll that has been settled since the Neolithic. The courtyard and grounds are freely walkable with Rhine valley views, the interior opens for guided tours and cultural events in season, and open-air concerts fill the courtyard on summer evenings.

History

The castle began as a medieval church and cemetery on a hilltop; in the early 12th century the cemetery was given up and the church was slowly fortified with a ring wall, and the castle's name is first recorded in 1296. It stands on a free-standing rock 70 metres high near the centre of Balzers (Wikipedia, Gutenberg Castle).

When to go

May to October for open grounds, gardens in bloom and the events calendar; interior access depends on tour and event schedules, so check ahead. The hilltop is lovely at golden hour with the Rhine valley below.

What to expect

Interior visiting is limited to set tours and events rather than daily opening - plan around the schedule or settle for grounds and views, which are genuinely worth the stop. Balzers is quiet; the visit pairs naturally with the bus route to or from Switzerland. The climb up is short but steep.
