East Nimba Nature Reserve

The Nimba range runs its green knife across three borders, and Liberia's slice - the East Nimba Nature Reserve - climbs from rainforest to ridge grassland above the old mining town of Yekepa, whose mid-century company streets make a time capsule at the mountain's foot. The reserve shares the massif's famous biology: chimpanzees, duikers and a bat-and-amphibian roster with Nimba's celebrated endemics, while the ridge walks - arranged with reserve guides - open views across Guinea and Ivory Coast from the grassy heights. Mining past and conservation present coexist here visibly, which is its own honest education.

When to go

November to April, dry season, for ridge visibility and workable trails; harmattan mornings are coolest and clearest. Arrange guides and permissions ahead through the reserve's Yekepa contacts.

Good to know

This is arranged-access conservation land, not open hiking country - permissions, guides and fees are the route in, and some zones stay closed for research or safety. Facilities are Yekepa guesthouses. The Blue Lake is scenic and unswimmable - mine-pit water with mine-pit edges.
