Ras Chekka Cliffs

Ras Chekka is the point where the coastal range comes right down to the water, a wall of white limestone several hundred metres high that the old coast road had to tunnel through. The cliffs are the most dramatic stretch of the Lebanese shore, pale rock above deep blue water, and a chapel sits in a hollow near the top. Quarrying and a cement works occupy part of the headland behind, which is part of the honest picture of the place.

• The cliff face - white limestone dropping several hundred metres to the sea.
• The coast tunnels - the old road cut through the base of the headland.
• The chapel - a small church set in a hollow high on the slope.
• The water - deep blue sea directly below the rock face.

When to go

April to June and September to November are the best. Morning light on the white rock is strongest. Winter storms make the base of the cliffs dangerous.

What to expect

There are no marked viewpoints or paths and stopping safely on the coast road is difficult. A cement plant and quarry sit behind the headland and are visible from many angles. The cliff edges are unfenced.
