Turaida Museum Reserve

Turaida's round red-brick tower stands on the high ground above the Gauja, the most photographed castle in Latvia and the emblem of the whole park. Around it spreads a museum reserve of medieval buildings, a hillside of folk sculptures and the churchyard grave tied to the tragic legend of the Rose of Turaida.

When to go

Late September for the valley in autumn colour, the classic Turaida view; summer for the full open museum. Combine with the cable car and Gutmanis Cave across the valley.

Honest expectations

The castle is largely a careful reconstruction on medieval foundations, presented as a museum rather than romantic ruin. It is the standard Sigulda highlight, so summer weekends bring crowds and coaches. The reserve is spread over a hillside, with some climbing between parts.
