Sigulda Cable Car

The Sigulda cable car has run since 1969, a single cabin carrying around twenty people on a span of just over a thousand metres between Sigulda and Krimulda, crossing the Gauja valley at around forty metres above the river, and it remains the only aerial cableway of its kind in the Baltic states. The crossing takes seven minutes and gives the standard view of the valley with Turaida castle on one side and the Sigulda bluffs on the other, at its best in the autumn colour season when Sigulda fills for exactly that. Bungee jumping from the cabin operates in summer. Krimulda at the far end has a manor house, the Gutmanis cave path and walking routes down to the river.

When to go

Late September to mid-October for the autumn colour, which is the peak and when Sigulda is busiest; April to October generally. The cable car runs year round with reduced winter service and closes in high wind.

Honest expectations

The cabin is small and queues build in the autumn season. Service closes in wind and for maintenance. The crossing is short. Sigulda in peak autumn weekends is extremely crowded.
