Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre

Laos has dozens of recognised ethnic groups and very little public museum space devoted to them, which is the gap this centre was set up to fill. It is small, independently run, and built on fieldwork: the displays cover Akha, Hmong, Tai Dam, Katu, Kmhmu and others through clothing, tools, ritual objects and recorded interviews with the people who made and used them. Textiles are the strength, and the labelling explains technique and meaning rather than treating the pieces as decoration.

When to go

Year-round, since it is indoors and takes a wet afternoon well. Mornings are quiet. The centre closes on some days of the week and over Lao New Year, so it is worth checking before walking up the hill.

Things to know

It is genuinely small and two hours is the maximum. The entry fee is high by local museum standards, which funds the fieldwork rather than the building. Anyone hoping for royal or religious art is in the wrong museum.
