Aygul-Tash

Aygul-Tash, the moon-flower rock, is a hill near Batken where Fritillaria eduardii, called aigul in Kyrgyz, grows wild: a tall fritillary with hanging orange-red bells that flowers for two or three weeks in April, covering the slopes, and then vanishes for the year. The plant is rare and protected, and this is effectively its only Kyrgyz locality; a legend about a girl named Aigul who died on the rock attaches to it and is retold at a small annual festival that coincides with the bloom. The rest of the year there is nothing to see. Batken province is the far southwest of the country, a long way from anywhere and complicated by the border geography of the Ferghana valley, so few outsiders make the trip.

What to expect

The bloom lasts two or three weeks and timing it from a distance is hard. Batken is remote, with limited flights and long road journeys, and border geography in the region complicates travel. The plant is protected: picking or digging it is illegal and it is already scarce. There are no visitor facilities.
