The sanctuary at Mramor outside Pristina was set up in 2013 to take in brown bears that had been kept in small cages outside restaurants as an attraction, a practice banned in Kosovo in 2010. Around twenty animals live in wooded enclosures on the site with pools and climbing structures. The bears cannot be released and the sanctuary is where they stay, with the cages they came from displayed alongside.

When to go
April to October is the main season. Bears are least active in the winter months. It keeps set hours and closes on some days.
Honest expectations
It is a rescue sanctuary and the animals are visible only when they choose to be. Winter reduces activity considerably. Two hours covers the site.
