Getting thereFrom the Madaba plateau down to the Mujib system; guided canyoning only
EntryGuided trips charged

Wadi Hidan runs down from the plateau into the Mujib system through a canyon that narrows to a few metres between sandstone walls, with pools that have to be swum and drops that have to be abseiled, and it is done as a full-day canyoning route with guides and ropes. It joins the Mujib gorge before reaching the Dead Sea. Water runs through it year round, which is unusual in this country.

What you actually see

  • The narrows - the canyon closing to a few metres between sandstone walls.
  • The pools - the water that has to be swum through on the route.
  • The abseils - the drops descended on ropes with guides.
  • The Mujib junction - the point where the canyon joins the larger gorge.

When to go

April to October is the canyoning season. Winter flash floods make the canyon lethal and it is closed. Trips run through the Mujib reserve.

Honest expectations

This is a technical canyoning route requiring ropes, guides and swimming ability; it is not a walk. Flash floods are a genuine and recurring danger. Trips must be booked with licensed operators.

Nearby

Wadi Mujib is downstream, and Madaba is north.
