The bathing pool at Havre des Pas was built in 1895 out on the rocks below the promenade, a seawater pool enclosed by a wall with a wooden footbridge running out to it, so that swimming was possible regardless of a tide that goes out further here than almost anywhere. It fell derelict and was restored, and it remains free and open. The Victorian guest houses along the front behind it date from the same period.

What you actually see

  • The pool - the 1895 seawater basin enclosed out on the rocks.
  • The footbridge - the wooden walkway running out from the promenade.
  • The tidal setting - a pool built because the sea retreats so far here.
  • The Victorian front - the guest houses along the shore behind.

When to go

May to September is the swimming season. The pool fills and empties with the tide. Water is cold at any time of year.

Honest expectations

The water is cold and the pool empties at low tide, so timing matters. Facilities are limited and there is no lifeguard. The surrounding area is faded.

Nearby

St Helier is west, and Samarès Manor is east.
