Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle anchors the city's green heart with the country's most storied fortress ground - founded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583 as the seat from which he unified Japan, rebuilt across the centuries, and today crowned by a 1931 main tower whose gold ornaments and green roofs preside over a vast double ring of moats. The walls are the true survivors: cyclopean granite blocks like the famous Octopus Stone, quarried and hauled by feudal domains competing to outdo one another, stacked into ramparts that still read as pure power. The tower interior is a modern museum of the Toyotomi era with an observation deck on top, while the surrounding park performs the seasons - a plum grove in February, then Nishinomaru's lawns and some three thousand cherry trees turning the moats pink in early April.

When to go

Late March to mid April for cherry blossom, with February's plum grove the quieter prelude. Clear winter days give the sharpest tower views; midsummer is hot and hazy.

Honest expectations

Know what you are buying: the tower is a 1931 concrete reconstruction with a lift and museum floors, not an original interior - the walls and moats are the authentic wonder. Blossom season packs the park and the tower queue. Nishinomaru charges its own small entry.
