Kurokawa Onsen

Kurokawa was an ordinary declining spa village until the inns made a collective decision in the 1980s to treat the whole village as one inn - the streets as its corridors and the baths as its rooms. Neon signs and concrete facades came down, buildings were rebuilt or refaced in wood and plaster, the signage was standardised in dark wood, and trees were planted along the river. Nearly thirty inns participate. The nyuto tegata is the mechanism: a round wooden pass bought at the village office admits the holder to any three of the outdoor baths, so guests move between inns rather than staying inside one. The baths differ - riverside, cave-cut, forested - and the walk between them along the gorge is part of it. It is small, has no station, and the buses take hours; that inaccessibility is part of why it stayed as it is.

Honest expectations

There is no railway station and buses take hours - a car is much easier. Inns book out well ahead and are not cheap. Day bath hours are limited and some baths close for cleaning. Tattoo rules vary by inn.
